Why Dreadlocks Fall Out

dreadlock extensions

Dreadlocks fall out because the dreads were not put in well in the first place. Truly, it is that simple. The best remedy is to put the dreadlocks into your hair securely the first time around. This will prevent you from needing to put them in again later or from losing the dreadlocks as they randomly fall out at school, work or the glow-in-the-dark rave.

It will take more time to properly secure dreadlocks into your hair. This is time well spent so don't try to rush it.

When I put Sophie's dreadlocks in her hair I use thread. This might very well be the most tedious way to put dreadlocks in but it might also be one of the best and most secure. I take a long piece of thread and double it then double it again. Then I wrap the thread many times around the hair and tie it off as I go. If one of the threads breaks there are still three other pieces of thread holding the dread together. This can be important after the dreadlocks have been in your hair for a month or two.

Dreadlocks are subjected to the environment. The thread also has to endure the elements. So, if you use four strands of thread instead of a single strand at a time you are more likely to have secure dreadlocks that will not fall out.

Other ways of securing dreads so that they won't fall out is to use kanekalon hair or yarn. Sophie used yarn to put double-ended dreads into a few people's hair and it seemed quick and easy and the dreads stayed in until the girls took the dreadlocks out. I've suggested that I use this approach on Sophie's hair and she's recommended that I stick with thread. Not sure I ever got a solid answer as to why she thinks thread works better. Maybe she just thinks the thread is less visible once the dreads are in.

I've used actual strands of kanekalon synthetic hair to tie off the dreads. The kanekalon is strong so it works fine. The problem is that the kanekalon is such a perfect match that it is very difficult to take the dreads out without cutting little bits of your own hair because you simply can't tell where one thing is ending and the other is beginning. I should mention that at the time Sophie had black hair and we were using black kanekalon on black dreads.

Remember to take the time to securely put the dreads in the first time around or else your will have a little trail of dread droppings as your dreadlocks fall out of your hair. Yes, people will ask, 'What was that?". Did your dread just fall out?". It's a new oddity that most people haven't seen before. Honestly, it is kind of weird seeing someone's hair fall out, real or not. So tight your dreads tightly. You'll be glad you did.
