1. Choose the colors of wool you want to use.

2. Buy wool.

3. Decide how long and how wide you want to make the dreadlocks.

4. Cut wool to size. Keep in mind that the length of the woving wool before becoming a dreadlock will be shorter than after you have turned the woving into a dread.

For two-toned woving wool dreads you will use two separate colors of woving wool.

In the example, our wool colors are mocha and mellow green.

We are making 14 inch dreads approximately a half inch wide with approximately 5 inches of mellow green at the bottom tip of the dread.

We cut the brown at approximately 9.5 inches (24cm).

We cut the green at approximately 4.9 inches (12.5cm).

These estimates are rough and each dread will be slightly different in length. This is intention and creates a more natural, organic look.

5. Bring water to a steam on stove or by using a microwave. The water needs to be hot but not too hot to touch as you will be soaking your hands in the water.

6. Add a little, very, very small squirt (I'm quoting Sophie) of dish soap to the water.

7. Then take one end of one of the dreads and separate it so that you can place the end of another dread into the middle of the first.

8. Put the two-toned dread in the water making sure that the two colors stay together. Let it soak for about a minute or two. Dreads should go in one at a time.

9. Then lift the dread slightly out of the water and begin to roll one end between your hands, separating it slightly before you roll it. This prevents the dread from flattening and keeps it cylindrical (or round for those of us not currently taking geometry).

10. Put the dread on a towel. Roll it down the towel adding slight pressure until it feels fairly dry.

11. Lay out on flat surface overnight to allow dreads to dry fully.

Voila! That's it. You're done it! Send us pics of your dreads. We'd love to see your work!
