Being Green in France:
No More Plastic Bags

Dec 29, 2007

About a year and a half ago, the French government put a ban on plastic bags. France had already done away with paper bags. This means that if you go to the super market and need a bag, you'll either have to purchase a heavy duty, reusable plastic bag or a large, last forever, durable canvas bag.

France just decided that plastic bags were too unhealthy for the environment and that it would no longer partake in adding the pollutant to the country, and as a bi-product, the world as a whole. Other countries can and should take notice of France's simple and effective attack against environmental waste and damage and follow suit.

We own three large canvas bags. One from IKEA. So, now whenever we go to IKEA for something we bring our bag. It is completely hassle free and creates no additional unnecessary waste to the environment. We also use this bag for other purposes, like laundry.

The canvas bags we use for shopping as terribly practical. If you are going to the super market you simply bring your bag(s). It's that simple. It's just a matter of thinking differently about how you shop. In the States, people are used to having the store take care of that for us. But people can change that thought process and determine that, in fact, they do not want or need to contribute to environmental waste in this way and they can start bringing their own bag(s).

Try it. It's empowering. Be kind to your world, therefore yourself. It's a willingness to take control and a stand on an environmental issue that simply put, doesn't need to be one. If you are a real go-getter, in a political sense, you could always petition that your city, state or country do away with plastic bags at super markets altogether.

Problem. Solution. Action.

The problem is that plastic bags are an unnecessary waste to the environment.

The solution is to stop using plastic bags.

The action action is to bring your own canvas bag(s) to the market so you are no longer dependent upon the plastic or paper bags offered by the super market. By bringing your own reusable bag you are doing your little part for both you and the earth, as a whole, to help protect against unnecessary environmental waste and further global destruction and deterioration. It's our world.

Let's own our responsibility to treat it with love and kindness.
