So You Can Live Your Dreams I feel incredibly impatient when it comes to this website, bringing traffic to it and figuring out how to affectively market the website. I bought this website domain about a week ago. I've been adding pages regularly as well as creating a workable layout (I hope!). Sophie says we can't expect to make any money from it for a least a couple months. She's probably right since she's basing her information off what I've told her and I always try to estimate things on the more conservative side. Still, I would apparently rather block that information out of my mind and feel anxious over not having the results yet! I don't mind change. I just don't like going through it. Once I'm on the other side of it, it's fine.
I've been a drop shipper for a few years now. It's a good business. It has allowed me to live abroad while still working for myself. I work at home and yes, generally in my pajamas which all works well since I'm a single mom and an expat who speaks very poor French. Drop shipping is like a very demanding, in your face and overbearing child who constantly needs attention and supervision. Drop shipping definitely has it's pros and cons. I can work while traveling so my income remains consistent even if I'm on vacation for several weeks at a time. Conceivably I could be a vagabond and simply roam the world while working as long as an internet connection is nearby. I set things up so that I don't need to work more than an hour or two while on vacation. When it comes to my free-spirited, nomadic tendencies drop shipping has been an ideal job for me. But not everything about drop shipping is wonderful. I've had to learn a great deal about customer service and placating customers. You become quite a persuasive talker. People need to be appeased, consoled and validated. Basically, people need attention and as my ex would tell me I'm not codependent. There is also the hassle of constantly buying and selling things. Making sure it was sent. Making sure it arrived. It's the demanding child who needs constant attention and supervision which means it takes a lot of time and is very demanding. My goal is to create a more passive online business which will be less stressful, more rewarding and demand less of my attention. I want something different. I want another option. I'm ready for change and I've been looking around at my options. I've been self-employed for the better part of 7 years now and I know that I don't want to work for anyone else. That being said, I live in France and don't speak the language so finding a job here might not be terribly realistic or practical anyway.
Several years ago I created a website on single parenting, politics and the like. I had put up a few articles but I really didn't have the time to devote to it completely. I've always wanted to start it up again - to have a platform, so to speak. Single moms simply aren't given much respect these days. It's just not right. We need to be supported. We are raising the children of tomorrow. These children will be our bank tellers, our store clerks, our lawyers and our artists of tomorrow. Who we raise and how we raise them will define the next generation. So this is why I decided to learn how to create a website, in the beginning. A website gave me a platform to share my knowledge on single parenthood. Such as, a third of the households in the States are headed by single parents yet we are so under-represented. I think, in part, it has to do with how most people view single parenthood. It is viewed as a temporary position... or disposition. Most single moms plan on remarrying or hooking up with another partner. Most single parents don't plan on remaining single. This phenomenon keeps single mothers and their rights and their needs below the radar, unheard and often hushed. I'm not that kind of single mom. I have always planned on staying single while raising my daughter. Studies show that children are not better off with a step dad in the house -- except in the area of finances. Well, finances are no reason to get into a relationship when you already have an existing relationship (the relationship between parent and child) and family. Once my daughter's father and I broke up I knew that I would raise her on my own. I didn't know that single moms are often treated with scorn and disdain. And just for the record, people who treat single moms like that are the scum of the earth. Our society needs to support single moms. (No, not give them handouts but rather not discriminate against them and treat them like second class citizens.) I'll say it again, we are raising the children who will make up the citizens of tomorrow. That is nothing to scoff at or to scorn. You are the one who will be dealing with the citizens of tomorrow. How do you want them to treat you? How well educated would you like them to be? How intelligent should your doctor or banker be? When you do not support the children of tomorrow you also do not support your own future. So here I am. Once again at a personal crossroads longing for and looking for something different - something that will replace or at least add to my present income. It's not so much that I am looking for a supplemental income, I'm not. I'm looking to phase out my current work and replace it with something lovely, something that makes me happy. Something I love to do. Something else.
