Berlin and Berlinale - Day One

berlinale film festival

Feb. 7th, 2008

We're in Berlin. Still on the S-Bahn (Berlin's tram) on the way to our hostel. It's dark - just after 7:00pm. Berlin's shadows are harsh, strong, interesting. Some of the tram stops seem vast, industrial, hardened by lonesome, rough concrete, uninviting. Yet... warm and friendly.

The tram seats are covered in a vibrant pattern of mish-mashed colors daring you to graffitti on them knowing it won't be seen over the overt pattern matching the scratched etchings in the plastic window panes fabulously.

10:00pm
So we were going into Potsdamer Platz to get our barings. Got to the tram station. Got lost. Gave up. Came back to our super cool hostel and now are at a lovely little restaurant downstairs. Perfect!

This hostel is cool. It's called the Pegasus Hostel and it is in the Eastern Block of the city. Very all ages. Funky. Has character.

We're staying on the East Side of Berlin. Berlin is large, spead-out with over 3.5 million people.

German food is really rich and heavy. Germans must not live very long. H-E-A-V-Y. 'Hi! I ate a brick for dinner."

This is the first time we've ever been in the Eastern Block of Europe. Is this still the Eastern Block? I asked Sophie. She said, "It better be!" Cool!

You know, if you rent a car at Budget, in France, you can take it to Western Europe (such as Spain, Italy, Belgium and Holland) but not the Eastern European countries (such as Bulgaria, Hungary or Turkey). So, could one drive the car in the eastern part of Berlin? I couldn't tell you.

This food could kill me, easily. Whew. These people definitely don't come from California. There is a market across the way. I think we may be doing some cooking in the very near future. Not sure I can handle too much more eating out in this country.

Germany is such a nice change of pace. The Germans are so different from the French. Change can be refreshing in and of itself.

We took 77 pictures today on the new camera I bought so I could download pics of our trip on the website. I forgot the software CD. I'll do the downloads when I get back to Strasbourg .
