Berlin, Germany
These are photos taken of Sophie and the Berlin Wall during our Berlin Berlinale film festival trip. Enjoy the photos! In 1945, World War II ended and Berlin was divided into 4 sectors - American, British, French and Russian. Beginning in 1957 leaving East Berlin without permission was forbidden with violators being prosecuted and serving up to three years in prison. In 1961 the Berlin sectorial boarder was closed between East and West Berlin and barriers were built. In 1989, the Berlin Wall came down! On October 3, 1990 (one year and one day after Sophie was born) Germany was reunited. For more information on the history of the Berlin Wall click here. The East Side Gallery is a section of the Berlin Wall that is covered in graffiti art with approximately 106 paintings by artists from all over the world. It is considered the largest open air gallery in the world. The East Side Gallery graffiti art is easily accessible from our favorite hostel, Pegasus Hostel. In general, Berlin has some fabulous graffiti art throughout the city! |
